I didn’t start out as a comic book collector, I started out as a kid who loved to read comics.
- Superheroes were my favorite, of course, in particular I liked Captain America, Black Panther, and the Sandman.
I read all kinds of comics, though, and started to build up a pretty sizable collection before I even started trying. Now I am grown up, and consider myself a collector more than a fan. To be honest I don’t even read comics very often any more, I just buy them to add to my collection. My collection is protected by its own dedicated climate control system, that operated on its own backup power supply. No matter what happens, the climate control conditions in my storage room will remain at the perfect temp and air quality. When it comes to comic books, the ink and the paper are so delicate than any major shift in air quality can impact their condition. Of course none of this air quality stuff really matters if you are just buying comics to read them. Humidity levels and temperature control can have an impact on the long term value, but they still read just as well. If you are just starting out and can’t get a complete climate control system in place, there are still steps you can take to help. Invest in a good quality dehumidifier, this is something I cannot stress highly enough. It won’t cost that much, and a dehumidifier will combat the biggest threat to the condition of your books, that of moisture in the air.
