Are we giving our kids the wrong message?

When we got married and had our first child, my wife insisted that we move into a gated community.

I wasn’t so sure this was the kind of place that I wanted my kids to grow up in.

The place is very secure and it is really quite wonderful. I grew up in a na area where we didn’t even have HVAC. We used a wood burning furnace for heat and we had several fans for cooling. My wife grew up in luxury. We have both worked hard and it isn’t like we didn’t earn the ability to live here, because we did. I just worry because I think we may be giving the kids the wrong ideas. The community screened us to make sure we were the ‘right type of people’ for their community. There are guards at the gate. Our house is brand new and it has a state of the art HVAC system. My kids have no idea what it would be like to live without heating or air conditioning and I don’t know if they could survive. What really worries me is that with all of these luxuries, I don’t know if they will be prepared to go out into the real world when the time comes. I can only hope that their being spoiled with everything being handed to them on the proverbial silver platter, they can make it. Maybe we need to start introducing them to the real world and get them ready before it is too late. I can only hope it isn’t too late.
