All I wanted was central HVAC.

I had lived in the north for long enough.

I couldn’t wait to get out of the north and head to where it was warm. I didn’t like the cold when it was so bad that my furnace refused to work. I hated having to make sure I had two forms of heating so I didn’t freeze to death. When winter ended, I decided it was time to move. I headed south so I would never have to face another winter again. I didn’t have a lot of money, so I found a cheap apartment. Not only did the landlord tell me that everything was my responsibility, but he also locked me into a two year lease. I should have realized that living cheaply meant I was living dangerously. The house I rented had only window air conditioners throughout, but they worked well. I came home one afternoon to find that all of the window air conditioners had been stolen. The thieves didn’t even shut the windows. I called the landlord to report the theft of the AC units. He asked me what I wanted him to do about it. I didn’t realize that my responsibility included the air conditioners. I told him I would like to have air conditioning installed and he laughed while hanging up. I figured that if I were going to have to install my own air conditioning, I was going to have central air conditioning. Once I priced it out, it was cheaper to install central air conditioning, than to replace all of the window air conditioners.
