I unplugged it and sent a text to my landlord
I was having friends over to my new apartment for a housewarming party. All of my friends were bringing appetizers and drinks and we had plans to hang out at my new house all evening. I was so excited to hang out with everyone. I had only lived in this apartment for 5 days. There were a few things that I was not sure of. I knew that the walls in the living room needed a fresh coat, as well as the tiles in the shower. The tiles were grimey and could use a good scrub down. In the middle of our dinner, I noticed a smell of smoke from the window in my bedroom. Without hesitation, I jumped from the dinner table to assess the situation. The window unit air conditioner in my bedroom had started to smoke! I knew that something was off when I turned the window unit on for the first time. The fan took a long time to start up and I wondered if it would even blow cool air. After a few minutes, everything seemed to be working fine. I was not sure how a window unit air conditioner should sound as this was my first experience with one. The one in the living room was also loud, but I did not think there was anything wrong. I was not going to let the smoking window unit air conditioner ruin my dinner party. I unplugged it and sent a text to my landlord. She was able to assess the situation and make it better by noon the following day.
