Motel A/C smelled like cigarettes

I recently rented a motel room that was so bad that I got up in the middle of the night, demanded a refund, and left despite being dog tired.

I was coming home from a business trip and had stopped short a few towns away from home because I couldn’t drive anymore.

I was so tired. I wasn’t necessarily in the best part of the town I was in, but I was desperate for sleep. I saw a cheap motel from a chain that I recognized and decided to spend the night there, or at least the rest of the night there. Long story short, I left the motel that night after getting my refund because the room stank horribly of cigarettes! The smell permeated the room the moment I turned on the air conditioner. It was this horrible smell of cigarettes mingled with mildew. That nasty air was now being circulated throughout the entire room and it almost made me gag. Initially, I decided that I may be able to tolerate it. At the very least, I took a hot shower and changed my clothes. When I got out of the shower, the air was cool, but it still reeked. My plan was to go to bed with a mask over my face. Despite the comfortable temperature, the smell coming from the air conditioner still managed to permeate the mask itself and I woke up after sleeping fitfully for about an hour and a half. That’s when I decided I had enough and I grabbed my things and went to the front desk to complain and get my refund! I ended up falling asleep in my car with the air conditioner running.
