My son learned a harsh lesson about changing air filters

My boy, Eric has always been the type of person to procrastinate everything. He has a full sink of dishes, laundry loads everywhere and so many pop bottles saved up and stored in his basement, it’s disgusting. You can see he’ll once in a blue moon wash one load but still has several to do. He just cleans the current clothes he has to “just get by,” as he says. I don’t know how he got this work ethic, but I know he didn’t get it from his mother and me. We are always trying our best to keep things clean. I know when we had Eric and his sister Jamie that it was challenging at times to keep things clean but we did our best. We may have fallen behind on a load or two of laundry but not like five or more. Now recently Eric has found himself in a predicament. His HVAC system stopped working and he needed a heating and cooling tech to visit his house to look at it. He found out from the HVAC expert that his HVAC system is done for and he could’ve prevented it if he just changed his air filters. Now, that could’ve been cheap maintenance, which he could’ve done himself is now costing him a lot more money. I know my son is a hard worker away from home so I’m sure he has the money to afford a new system but why can’t he just be better at home? I don’t get it but I hope to understand what he is thinking.
