Overnight HVAC worker’s story of a lizard rescue

Being on call for overnight shift for an HVAC company has its ups and downs.

On the plus side, we don’t get a lot of calls late at night and those calls we do get pay top dollar.

I also like working alone and not being bothered. On the down side, I do like my sleep. Last week I got an interesting call. Usually, when we tell people how much an emergency, late-night visit will cost them, they opt to schedule something for normal business hours but not this lady. She immediately said she didn’t care what it cost but that I must come out now. She then proceeded to tell me the problem. Her son’s leopard gecko had escaped and was inside of the ductwork. Her son was autistic and this lizard meant the world to him and it absolutely must be extracted from the ducts now. I hopped in my truck and got her their house in under 20 minutes. I used a scope to thread through the ductwork and find the little leopard gecko. This took some time but thankfully the little fellow didn’t move far when I took apart the ductwork and got him out. The lady was happy, the boy stopped crying and I was happy to help. I only charged them the regular hourly rate, not the emergency rate. Oh, and I put screens over all of the vents in the house too and I sold them at cost. Now the lizard can’t get into the ductwork again and I can go back home and snooze a little until the next call comes in.
