I recently went over to visit my neighbor, and I was appalled at his situation.
He was sitting in a cold house, with a winter coat on.
When I asked him if there was something wrong, he told me he was fine. He did tell me that the furnace had quit working almost a month ago. I couldn’t believe he hadn’t called the HVAC company. I asked him who his HVAC company was, and he said that he would handle it. I couldn’t believe that he had been living without heating for this long. He had to be in his eighties, and I also knew that he was an independent cuss. I knew he had a daughter, so I made a point of going over to talk to him two hours later. My wife had made some cookies so I could take them over to him. The subject was pushed to his daughter, and I wanted to know where she lived. He saw through my ruse and he told me that he did not involve his daughter in his life. He opened the door and told me that I could take my cookies home with me. I couldn’t believe how upset he had become. I finally came right out and told him that if he couldn’t afford to have the furnace repaired, my wife and I would gladly loan him the money. He said it didn’t need repaired, but it did need replaced. He had to wait until his retirement check came through. Before I left, I had convinced him to come over and spend some time with us until the furnace was repaired.
