Installing a window AC unit is a fairly easy job. Most homeowners will complete this installation on their own, but every once in a while a customer will call the AC repair shop to complete the simple installation. A few weeks ago, one of our retired customers called for some help. The woman bought a brand new 24000 BTU AC unit for the living room, but she couldn’t even move the box from the doorway to the call. The delivery guy dropped off the AC unit in the doorway and it was sitting there when we arrived. I didn’t think the AC unit installation job would take a long time. I can usually install a window AC unit in about an hour, but this job took four hours to complete. The homeowner didn’t have any power to the outlet located directly under the window where the air conditioner was installed. I had to re-wire the electric in the room. I had to go to the hardware store to pick up the right parts. I probably should have called an electrician, but I didn’t want to waste time. It would have taken at least an hour to get someone else out there to help and I was already running behind schedule. It’s been a long time since I had that many problems with a routine installation and it was a very humbling experience. It certainly reminded me that some of the simplest jobs can still take a lot of time and energy. I won’t underestimate an easy job again.
