When I was told that we would be leaving the zone controlled HVAC of the office to work remotely from home, I wasn’t so pleased.
But Covid struck and there just really wasn’t anything else that we could do.
The problem was that I simply couldn’t do a large chunk of my job from the central air conditioning of my home. That just wasn’t going to be possible. I spend a lot of time traveling for business. I’m one of about 10 people who are out with the customers to ensure our services are working or I’m closing deals. I tried doing that from the air conditioning of my house but it wasn’t easy. Plus, I could tell that the customers were getting frustrated since they were accustomed to our company to be there when they needed us. That’s sort of our thing. So finally, I had an online meeting with the bosses to let them know that I was prepared to go out on the road indefinitely. I’m single so staying out on the road wasn’t going to wreck a marriage or keep a dad from his kids. I got the bosses blessing and loaded up the car. From there, it was all road and air conditioning that first summer of the pandemic. I even found that the hotels along the interstate consistently provided the very best HVAC cooling with those big wall unit air conditioners. But our customers were happy and that’s what I was looking for most. I didn’t want our company to take a hit just because we couldn’t get to our customers. There were a few other colleagues that took my example. That made a really big difference when it came to weathering this pandemic as a company.
