There was a freeze warning in my area over a year ago. We had the Heating component checked the day before the warning. The worker declared there was no issue with the oil furnace. The next day, I had dinner like usual. The whole house felt really cold though. Wondering why, I looked at the thermostat, which had been set at the normal temperature. The screen on the thermostat was totally black! No temperature readings, no working sounds when I tried to raise or lower the temperature. So next I tried cleaning the crud inside the heater. I thought that might be the reason for the thermostat not working. Then I looked at the ductwork associated with the heater. I then scrubbed my ductwork, changed the furnace filter and cleaned everything near the heating system. I tried multiple youtube suggestions but I got nowhere. Meanwhile, the lake house got more and more cold. I tried calling the business who’d been there the night before, and many other Heating plus A/C maintenance companies. All of them were on other appointments and could not get me in for the day. I then realized what the issue was. I simply needed a new battery in my thermostat. That was the reason it would not connect to my furnace. I want so worried about the heater, that I did not think the thermostat was the cause. A pack of double A batteries fixed all my issues. The heating component ran great and the big freeze did not affect me.

I have constantly loved the fall! You are done with the days of searing heat and the humid afternoons of summer. There is no snow on the ground or tons of rain. Fall just has the best weather ever. As a young boy, I never understood how seasons changed or how the position of the earth affected the weather. All I knew was that the rays of the sun would come through my window. The glow would make me look forward to the day ahead. During the summers, I’d sneak out of bed to re-adjust the A/C settings. I knew my dad hated that the a/c would be on in the fall. He felt fall and spring meant no HVAC. He wanted to only have a/c for summer and heating in the winter. That is just not possible in our area. I had to sneak a little cooling around him during hot fall days. He always would blame my mother for changing the a/c settings. Mom was the one always feeling a bit warmer than most due to menopause. He would say she changed the a/c settings due to a hot flash. I am glad she never told on me. I loved having a little a/c during the hottest part of the day. How much extra money could it have cost too? I’m sure my mother silently thanked me for the several times I snuck out to adjust the A/C. I was giving her confirmation that someone else was sweaty and hot. Not just her.

The cleaner the better, that is what I think anyway. I always make sure to clean my a/c system as good as I can. So, why do we need to keep them clean? We assume that accumulated dust on the filter is good enough. The air filter catches some dust, but not all. The fan blades can get sluggish and tired with too much dust. The restricted airflow puts a strain on the fan motor. We also know that dirty air ducts can harbor lots of nasty things. The dirty ductwork can pollute indoor air quality. It can have mold, insects, grime plus maybe even some critters hiding in them. Getting ductwork cleaning goes a long way. Why does the A/C component seem to run better when it is clean? Dirt plus grime on the inner coils makes everything work harder. The harder the a/c machine works, the more it costs to run. Cleaning the copper tubes removes that dirty layer and allows the A/C component to operate more efficiently. And that saves you currency. The a/c system is also less likely to overheat. When the a/c overheats, parts get worn out. Now you need to factor in the cost for a cooling repair. The cooling repair won’t come cheap either. Staying on it with regular cleanings ensure no to little cooling repairs. Service on an air conditioner is just not that much. It is worth spending a little to gain a lot in the end.
