Beekeeping can be a fun hobby, and you get to harvest honey at the end of the season.
To start off, you don’t need a huge amount of cash, space, or even time.
Most beekeepers place a box near blooming flowers. There are only roughly 100,000 beekeepers still in this country. Those numbers have dwindled significantly over the past 40 years. My wife and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money up front, so we watched several videos online before we attempted to make a beehive on our own. We used some pieces of wood to create a small box near our blooming fruit trees. We waited and waited for the honeybees to come, but we didn’t have much luck. We decided to research some additional information and we found out that we needed to attract the bees in a different way. We purchased a honey bee starter strip that is made to attract all of the bees. We started with a single beehive box and now we have three. We don’t have enough honey to sell, but we do have plenty to eat. My wife and I have fresh honey every morning with our toast and coffee. It’s fun to have bees in the backyard and every one of my friends thinks it’s neat to know a beekeeper. If my wife and I had enough money, we could probably put four or five more beehives on our property. Then we would have enough honey to sell to our friends, family and other local citizens. Maybe we can add more in a few short years.
