Sending my son to HVAC classes was a good move

If you haven’t noticed yet, I am here to tell you that there is a movement back toward encouraging young people to go to school to learn the trades.

I was a high school English teacher for about 10 years, and back then it was absolutely forbidden to suggest to any student that they should do anything other than go to a four-year college or university.

I never understood that, and it used to aggravate me. At the time, though, many people looked down on going to trade school and thought that people who went into vocational training were just not smart or good enough. Well that is ridiculous and when my son was about 23, after he had graduated from college, he looked at me and said he just didn’t like any of the job offers he was getting. When you spend a ton of money to get your son or daughter through college, that is the last thing you want to hear. That is when he came to me and said that he would like to go to a school that teaches the trades. He was looking at Plumbing, air conditioning, and electricians. In fact, for a little while he even considered nursing. Finally, after taking a few courses that were required for everyone, he decided he wanted to learn how to install and repair air conditioning and heating systems. The HVAC program at our local trade school is quite intensive oh, and it has a good reputation. The heating and cooling program does not accept everyone who applies, but my son was able to get in the first year he applied. Graduated a few years ago and has been an HVAC technician ever since and he absolutely loves it.
