I’ve received wisdom over the years by doing what I do that you never get everything you want with a prolonged negotiation.
So be sure you know what it is you truly want out of any deal you propose.
This is what I had in my mind when I was trying to get my teenagers to go camping to watch the leaves change… I grew up in a place where the foliage is spectacular plus I wanted my teens to experience it with me… However, my teens plus my wifey just weren’t about to leave their air conditioning at home for a camping trip, they didn’t care about the method of camping in pitch perfect weather much less when there might be a bit of a nip in the air. This was a real bummer because I grew up camping. I always appreciated weekends away with my pops plus out of the air conditioning of home. There’s no doubt my mother was also truly blissful to get the central air conditioning all to herself for those weekends; But it was always a great time with Pop plus some of my fondest memories are camping with him. I just wish my teens were the same way. So when I started to make deals in order to get them to go along with my camping trip, I kept my eye on the prize which was the trip itself. And I remembered that as I needed to swallow my pride when I agreed to bring along space gas furnaces as well as going camping in a campground with electricity. But it was worth the compromise because the trees this year were stunning. The kid’s minds were blown plus that’s all I truly wanted out of this deal.
