Just when I thought that nothing else could go wrong in my apartment, I lost the little window air conditioner unit in my bedroom.
On one particularly hot summer afternoon I was in the kitchen when I heard a terrible noise coming from my bedroom.
It was a loud rattling thrumming noise coming from the window air conditioner. It was increasing in intensity the longer the system ran, so I quickly shut it off, nervous of what might happen if I had let it continue. I have no idea what could have possibly been causing the problem. My landlord, who is a bit of a bumbling man who means well but doesn’t know much of anything about basic maintenance checked on the window A/C when I reported it. He turned it on and fussed over it and witnessed the strange noise. I could tell he was clueless, but after about 5 minutes of fussing he admitted that he would have to call out an HVAC technician. He might as well just have admitted that from the beginning. Anyway, I was having a history with appliances falling apart around my apartment. The refrigerator just recently needed to be replaced, and I had to choose one that was a good deal smaller and more compact than my old one, because I couldn’t afford one of the same size. To be frank, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to afford a new window air conditioner either! The HVAC technician did indeed confirm my worst fears that it did indeed need to be replaced entirely. I might be using nothing but fans and an open window for a while!
