Not with a bang. Ancient furnace finally breaks with a whimper.

That’s why it was quite shocking when I realized that the indoor air temperature was a bit chilly and the furnace wouldn’t start

It’s kind of interesting to me how anticlimactic major life changes can be sometimes. A few weeks ago I spontaneously quit my job, and basically nothing has changed. I don’t feel conflicted about the decision and my day-to-day life has continued to be steadily improved. I would expect more emotional distress and a much louder tone of resistance before this happened, but you can always be surprised. I certainly was shocked the other week when our massive central heating system broke down and barely made a sound. For the past 25 years my family has been using the same furnace for our central heating system. The old forced air heating unit was nothing special when it was purchased, and it didn’t hold up very well over time. I don’t remember my family ever scheduling routine heating and cooling service appointments for the indoor air handling device. However, I certainly remember several emergency repair services when certified HVAC technicians arrived at our house in the middle of the night before we froze to death. There must have been at least seven occasions when we shelled out massive amounts of money for this failing forced air furnace. Every time it broke down in the past, it was a loud and disturbing occurrence. The furnace would squeal like it was a dying animal. That’s why it was quite shocking when I realized that the indoor air temperature was a bit chilly and the furnace wouldn’t start. At most, the old heater would make a tiny crying sound like a sad puppy. Apparently, despite all the past drama, this ancient central heating device really died with a whimper.
